This Sunday I attended the church of which my wife’s aunt and uncle are part, the Christian Outreach Center in Maryborough, Queensland.
We enjoyed a friendly welcome from a group of folk who obviously love the Lord, and who share that love with each other.
During the services they mentioned their love for old hymns and songs.

In that vein here’s a track from Iris Dement’s Lifelines album.
She’s singing a song called Hide Thou Me. It seems to be adapted from a hymn by Frances Van Alstyne. It’s very much a Gospel song rather than a hymn as such, but I love the testimony it embodies.
Dement has a very distinctive vocal style and this is one of my favourite tracks off the album.
Doesn’t get much more old timey than this.
The lyrics.

Sometimes I feel discouraged
And I think my works in vain
I’m tempted oft(en) to murmur
To grumble and complain
But then I think of Jesus
And all he’s borne for me

Then I cry
Oh rock of ages
Hide thou me
Ohh rock of ages
Hide thou me

Ohh rock of ages
Hide thou me
No other refuge
Can save but thee
Through this old world
I’ve wandered so far, far from thee

Then I cry
Ooh rock of ages
Hide thou me

Ooh rock of ages
Hide thou me
No other refuge
Can save but thee
Through this old world
I’ve wandered so far, far from thee

Then I cry
Ooh rock of ages
Hide thou me
