Focussing on the covenant keeping obedience of Jesus in the wilderness as recorded in Luke 4, tonight we sang Philip Lawson Johnston’s ‘Jesus Is The Name We Honour’ at mgpc.
I think the lyrics do a wonderful job of calling to mind various Scriptural allusions and themes about the glorification of Jesus. He did not come to glorify Himself, but the Father has glorified Him and we reflect that in our praise as we glorify Him as God.
The tune is melodic and helps the singers soar in the praise of Jesus, particularly during the chorus.
I think it could be sung in any gathered setting with a variety of instrumental or vocal styles.
Here’s the lyrics (sheet music can purchased for download at Kingsway Music):
1.
Jesus is the name we honour;
Jesus is the name we praise.
Majestic Name above all other names,
The highest heaven and earth proclaim
That Jesus is our God.
Chorus.
We will glorify,
We will lift Him high,
We will give Him honour and praise.
We will glorify,
We will lift Him high,
We will give Him honour and praise.
2.
Jesus is the name we worship;
Jesus is the name we trust.
He is the King above all other kings,
Let all creation stand and sing
That Jesus is our God.
3.
Jesus is the Father’s splendour;
Jesus is the Father’s joy.
He will return to reign in majesty,
And every eye at last shall see
That Jesus is our God.

This first YouTube is a basic setting of the song.

As a bonus here’s a Big Band arrangement of the song by someone called Marcus Green who also provides vocals and is accompanied by the National Big Band of Wales at the Big Band Gospel 2 Concert in Cardiff, November 2007. Where are the Big Band/Swing churches?
