Stephen dropped by this blog today.
On his blog he has a review of John Benton’s book ‘Why Join A Small Church’.
In the course of the review Stephen observes: ‘(Many large churches are small churches with large fringes; the core of the church is still a bunch of a dozen to 30-odd people who make everything work, they just have more hangers-on than the small church does.)’
The other thoughts contained in the review are a useful counter to my own more jaded attitudes toward churches that have lost their Gospel focus.
At mgpc we are striving to expand our core.
Not to become a large church.
But to be a church where every Christian associated with us is living a life of witness and service that communicates the Gospel.
Nice to hear that review caught your eye, Gary. Since it was written we’ve been joined by a new family at Wodonga PC. It has been a great encouragement and a challenge to consider how we can better minister and reach out with the small core we have. Like you at Mount Gambier we also hope that God will grow the core (hopefully to the point that it may cheerfully divide and start afresh somewhere else).
I remember visiting at Mount Gambier one rainy July and finding the people warm and welcoming (the ones I met anyway).
