Presbyterian Pulse is the magazine of the Presbyterian Church of Australia in New South Wales. In addition to a national journal (Australian Presbyterian), the three eastern mainland states each publish their own magazine/newsletter. Victoria used to publish a newspaper style and then moved to the magazine sized ‘Fellow Workers’. Queensland has published ‘New Directions’ for about ten years now. A few years ago New South Wales joined the club with ‘The Presbyterian Pulse’ or ‘The Pulse’ for short.
It can be observed that ‘Australian Presbyterian’ usually deals with a variety of general issues. News from local churches takes up about one page. So, the state newsletters generally major on news about what’s going on across their own patch.
‘The Pulse’ is well put together, featuring full colour and plenty of pictures. The skills of a professional journalist make it very engaging reading. Magazines such as this serve a positive purpose. They help Congregations and local members to learn about the effective ministries of the denomination and encourage them in their work of ministry and mission. Some Congregations struggle and are unaware of how God is blessing other places. They feel their experience is general of all others. Learning of strategies and efforts that are seeing the fruit of growth they can be challenged to continue in faith in their own locations.
In addition, ‘The Pulse’ usually has some form of devotional or teaching material from a number of authors including Naomi Reed, Peter Barnes, and the serving State Moderator.
It’s always worth a look and each month a pdf version is loaded onto their website.
The August edition features some news from the recent NSW State Assembly (Annual Meeting).
Well worth a read.
