When Mark’s Gospel was written Jesus’ institution of the Lord’s Supper was part of the church’s life.
In customary fashion Mark provides a concise account, and rather than adorning what was already being done with lots of detail he causes us to focus on what presumably he understood were the central motifs of eating bread and drinking wine in obedience to Jesus.
We perceive a union with Jesus, a sharing in a covenant relationship with God that is sealed by Jesus’ blood, and, a future expectation that expands our comprehension and experience of God’s reign and rule through Jesus.
